What had happened? Clearly an accident, but what had been meant to happen? And had anyone meant anything to happen? If yes, who had meant what? All of it with me like a snapshot view from a jarred camera, no firm outlines of anything; nothing clear—or ever would be. Palef with the gun? And a chance to get even with Gonzalez? Or get even with the Doctor for talking too much? Hardly. The Doctor with the gun? Head full of jealousy? Hardly.—Accident with a pistol? It happened all the time.

Half an hour at the Post Hospital—there with Millie (and a memory of the change in her face at learning of the accident, the quick pulling together of eyebrows, the quick O of her mouth round as a dollar),—then on to the big hospital in town, he beside me under some sort of shot that left him mumbling, “No more root canals, Allen. No more needles into gums. No more mouths!”, and after a silence, “Travel. Round the world, Jessie and I. Then round again, round and round,” moving the white bandages an inch or two in a rotary motion and sending me a flash of our Madras hotel and myself suffering under the very freedom he rejoiced at—or pretended to, voice sinking to a sleepy tone probably muffled by his drugs: “A sad tale’s best for winter,” turning his head to smile at Millie leaning over to lay a hand on his shoulder. “I’ll tell it softly, Millie. Yond’ crickets shall not hear. A man dwelt by a churchyard …” voice melting out as I turned left at Emergency Entrance.
